Being a local business here in Omaha, we love supporting other local businesses, especially right now during this unprecedented time. We wanted to take a moment and shout some love for some of our favorite local places, and we encourage you to check them out if you live in the Omaha area. No matter where you live, take this opportunity to support your local establishments.

We asked our Aksarben Insurance team what their favorite local restaurants and shops are. Check out our top favorites below.

We’re Kind of Crazy About Mexican Food

Insurance Advisor, Erika, is a big fan of the chicken enchiladas at Taqueria El Rey. This local restaurant serves authentic Mexican cuisine and has three locations in the metro area. You will find the original dining location in Lincoln at the corner of 27th and O Streets. Omaha has two food trucks serving up the same delicious food at 30th and Leavenworth Streets, and Saddlecreek and Cumings.

Maggie, head of operations, loves visiting Jacobo’s Grocery Store. One of her must-have foods from this Omaha tradition is the freshly baked sweet bread. Jacobo’s has been a family-owned business in Omaha since 1976 and serves up food from traditional family recipes, along with being a full-service grocery store. If chips and salsa are your thing, Jacobo’s cilantro salsa and handmade corn chips are an Omaha favorite!

Lead Agent, JR, loves to stop at Abelardo’s Mexican restaurant when he’s hungry. With an extensive menu, there’s something for everyone. And with eight locations in the Omaha area, there’s bound to be one close to you. Abelardo’s serves up authentic Mexican food that is prepared fresh to order and has 24-hour drive-thrus so you can satisfy your craving whenever it hits!

And We Love Some Local Classics

Cyrus, CEO, is a fan of two local classics – Runza and Scooter’s Coffee. Originally founded in 1949 just down the road in Lincoln, Runza ® was started by a sister and brother and is still run by their grandchildren today. The Runza Sandwich features fresh-baked bread stuffed with ground beef, onion, a blend of spices, and cabbage, and people go crazy for it. While Runza franchises have expanded into neighboring states, they choose not to go national to keep it fresh. But don’t worry, they ship their original Runza Sandwich to any of the 48 contiguous United States!

Scooter’s Coffee is another local business that has boomed. Founded in 1998 in Bellevue, Nebraska, you can visit one of the dozens of franchise locations in the Omaha metro, and get whatever coffee drink your heart desires. Scooter’s serves customers in more than 270 locations across 16 states in the U.S., so there likely may be one wherever you are.
